Works For Me Wednesday-Homemade Dishwasher Detergent & Rinse Agent

For about a month now, I have been experimenting with making my own dishwasher detergent. I decided to do this because it saves me money and most of the ingredients are in my kitchen. While experimenting with different recipes, one thing that was dissappointing was the cloudy residue on my glasses. I finally found one recipe that combats the icky cloudy film, this one works for me! Here it is:

Place these ingredients in a 32oz. container and labeled it "Dishwasher Detergent.:
  • 1/2 cup of Borax (you can find Borax in the laundary and/or cleaning products aisle at your local grocer).

  • 1/2 cup washing soda (I use Arm and Hammer Laundary washing powder, my store did not have the regular washing soda, it works great).

  • 1/4 cup citric acid (if you do not have access to a specialty store that sells citric acid, you can use two packs of lemon Kool Aid) The citric acid prevents the cloudy film from appearing on glasses.

  • 1/4 Kosher salt (adds scrubbing action)

  • 1 tbsp White vinegar for the rinse aid dispenser (The white vinegar is your rinse aid).

Place lid on container and shake ingredients together. Place 1 tbsp. of homemade mixture in dishwasher dispenser.

Hope this works for you!

  1. Does it work in hard water? :-) I'll have to see about giving it a try...

  2. Hi Kelly,

Thanks for stopping by :-). I also have hard water and this seems to be the best recipe I've found so far. Sometimes, I add more detergent to the second compartment in the dishwasher. Its important to have the citric acid (or lemon Kool Aid) as it helps with the hardwater as well as the White Vinegar in the rinse aid. Hope this helps. Let me know if this works for you.
